A Syrian woman was appointed at the head of a Free Syrian Army battalion, a YouTube video purportedly showed.

The video, broadcast on Friday, shows 30-year-old Amira al-Aaraour giving instructions to members of the rebel battalion.

In the video, Aaraour said that she had acquired military leadership skills from her father, who is a ranking general in the regime’s armed forces.

Syria has been ravaged by an violent uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad that has killed an estimated 60,000 people since March of 2011, according to the United Nations.
