Syria may retaliate after Israeli attack, envoy says

The Syrian ambassador to Lebanon said his country may launch a "surprise" retaliation in response to the alleged Israeli attack on Syrian territory.

“Syria is capable of making the decision to launch a surprise attack as a response to the aggressive Israeli attack on a scientific research center in Jamraya in the Damascus district [of Syria],” Ali Abdel Karim Ali said in a statement on Thursday.

“The Zionist attack reveals the deep connection between the war that Syria has been witnessing for two years and the role Israel has played in this war against Syria.”

On Wednesday, Syria accused Israel of staging an air raid on a military research center, a day after a peace envoy issued a fresh warning of the 22-month conflict spilling over into neighboring states.

The strike took place as an opposition chief laid out preconditions for negotiations with the Assad regime. The news is breaking at a time where world outrage aimed at Syria’s regime is increasing because of a massacre that took place in Aleppo.
