Melkite Patriarch laments Christian suffering in Syria

Patriarch of the Church of Antioch Gregorios III on Friday spoke out on the suffering of Christians in Syria as violence continues to worsen in the civil war-stricken country.

“Around a hundred of our Catholic children and about a thousand Christians from all sects were killed [in the conflict] and some twenty churches were destroyed,” the National News Agency quoted the spiritual leader of the Greek Catholic Melkite Church as saying.

“The news you follow in media outlets does not reflect the tragic situation that the [Syrian] citizens are living through, especially in our Homs, Latakia, Aleppo, Houran, and Damascus dioceses.”

Syria is witnessing a violent uprising against Assad’s regime, which has killed more than 60,000 people since its outbreak in March 2011, according to figures released by the United Nations.
