Future MP says Hariri not involved in Sakr’s weapon contact with Syrian rebels

Future bloc MP Khaled Zahraman on Monday said the leader of the Future Movement, MP Saad Hariri, did not assign MP Okab Sakr to send weapons to Syrian rebels.

“Sakr made the decision to [send weapons to Syria] by himself, he involved himself in Syria’s military [issues], and he said he is proud of it,” Zahraman told Al-Akhbar al-Yawm news agency.

Zahraman also said that “Sakr said Hariri only assigned him to provide the rebels with humanitarian, political and public outreach assistance.”

However, Zahraman said his bloc would not repudiate Sakr for intervening in the Syrian crisis.

“Sakr did not commit a crime. It is an honor for him to help oppressed people,” Zahraman said.

In remarks published earlier on Monday, Sakr admitted to providing Syrian rebels with military support to overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Al-Akhbar newspaper last week published a series of transcripts revealing Sakr’s conversations with Syrian rebels to help arm them in their effort to overthrow the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanon’s political scene is deeply divided between supporters of the Assad regime, spearheaded by the March 8 group, and its pro-western opponents represent by the March 14 coalition.
