US disappointed in irregularities in Egyptian elections

The United States is disappointed with how Egypt's legislative elections were carried out and called reports of numerous irregularities worrying, the White House said Tuesday.

"The United States is disappointed with the conduct during and leading up to Egypt's November 28 legislative elections," White House national security spokesperson Mike Hammer said in a statement.

"While we are continuing to assess reports from a variety of sources, the numerous reported irregularities at the polls, the lack of international monitors and the many problems encountered by domestic monitors, and the restrictions on the basic freedoms of association, speech and press in the run-up to the elections are worrying.”

Egypt's main opposition party, the Muslim Brotherhood, said on Monday that it had lost most its seats in parliament in an election it charged had been "rigged and invalid.”
