Ukraine on Thursday recognized the rebels who ousted Moammar Qaddafi as the legitimate rulers of Libya, hours after its neighbor Russia made the same move.
"Recognizing the National Transitional Council [NTC] as the lone legitimate representative of the Libyan people, Ukraine calls on it to continue ensuring the safety of Ukrainian citizens on the territory of Libya," the foreign ministry said.
Ukraine said it was seeking to develop friendly relations with Libya and expected to take an "active part" in its post-war restoration process.
The moves by Ukraine and Russia to recognize the National Transitional Council comes well after similar decision by the United States and dozens of other countries.
It also came on the same day as France hosted a "friends of Libya" conference in Paris.
