Syrian state television reported Friday that army divisions had entered Jisr al-Shughur, where it said "elements of the armed groups have been arrested."
An activist said that "the army cleaned out three villages, Sarmaniyah, Sheikh Sindian and Ghanya" before advancing and "firing guns in the direction of Jisr al-Shughur, but it was almost deserted."
The Syrian government said earlier in the week that 120 security force members were killed by armed gangs in the northwestern town. Opposition groups said that security force members were killed by Syrian regime troops after they disobeyed orders to fire on protestors.
