The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Thursday that the Syrian authorities at the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition being smuggled from Lebanon into Syria.
“The truck [smuggling the arms] had an Iraqi license plate,” the news agency added.
“Authorities found 125 machine pump-action shotguns and more than 30,000 bullets for pistols secretly hidden in the truck's floor,” said SANA.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s troops have cracked down on protests against almost five decades of Baath Party rule which broke out mid-March, killing over 2,700 people, according to the United Nations. The regime has blamed “armed gangs” for the recent unrest.
