Romania recognizes Libyan rebels

Romanian President Traian Basescu announced Thursday that his government had decided to recognize Libya's rebel National Transitional Council as he headed to a Paris summit on the post-Qaddafi era.

"As far as Libya is concerned, Romania recognizes the National Transitional Council as its sole partner until the emergence of a better structure," Basescu was quoted as saying by the Mediafax and Agerpres news agencies.

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, refused to take part in the air strikes against Moammar Qaddafi’s regime in Libya but did send a frigate to impose the arms embargo and allowed its airports to be used by US refueling aircraft involved in military operations.
