On Saturday MTV aired a report alleging that an Islamic educational organization headed by Agriculture Minister Hussein al-Hajj Hassan—who is one of Hezbollah’s ministers—is buying land tracts in the northern Beirut suburb of Jdeideh.
Earlier in October the Media Against Violence group called on the authorities to respond to threats received by MTV correspondent George Eid related to his reporting on the issue. Interior Minister Ziad Baroud then promised to investigate such threats.
MTV’s Saturday report contained interviews with various citizens who said that Jean Abou Jawdeh, who sold the land, was “materially comfortable and did not need to sell property for financial reasons.”
