Missing American student in Syria is alive

Tik Root, the 21-year-old American student who went missing in Syria on March 18, is alive. That is what Root’s father told US newspaper The Boston Globe.

According to the paper, Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy phoned Tom Root on Saturday to tell him that the Syrian ambassador to the US confirmed Tik was in Syrian custody.

“This is a huge step, and we’re very excited,’’ Root told The Boston Globe. “Up until this point, we didn’t know if he was dead. Now, we know he’s alive, protected, and healthy. And given what’s going on in Syria, being in custody isn’t such a bad thing. We’re just waiting for him to be transferred to the custody of the US Embassy,” he added.

According to the paper, it’s not clear where Root is being held or when he will be released.
