Miqati: Stop political,
sectarian incitement

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati warned against the increasing threat of sectarian and political provocation in Lebanon.

“I call for putting an end to the acts of political and sectarian provocation and incitement, since the dangers that are facing us are great,” Miqati said on Friday during a ceremony at the Rawdat al-Fayhaa in Tripoli.

“Regret won’t help if we are providing a welcoming environment for threats and dangers.”

The premier further warned that Lebanon was going through “a difficult period.”

“We should count on God first and then on our awareness as Lebanese that protecting civil peace is in our interest.”

Miqati’s remarks were made in the northern city where a recent flare-up in sectarian clashes linked to the crisis in neighboring Syria killed at least 31 people and injured more than 200.

Meanwhile, the conflict in neighboring Syria has increasingly spilled over into Lebanon, with the Damascus regime’s ally Hezbollah dispatching fighters to battle alongside the Syrian army against rebel forces.

The group’s members had been particularly active in the regime's victory over rebels in the Homs town of Al-Qusayr.

We should count on God first and then on our awareness as Lebanese that protecting civil peace is in our interest.
