Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel said on Thursday that his party “takes pride in its alliance with [former Premier] Saad Hariri.”
“[The alliance] preserves the higher Lebanese interests and [the country’s] sovereignty and democratic system,” a press statement quoted the Kataeb leader as saying.
Gemayel was speaking following a meeting with Mufti of Tripoli and North Lebanon Sheikh Malek al-Shaar.
“[Communication is ongoing] with all [Lebanese] leaders, particularly Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who has made all efforts to underscore the higher national interests, preserve the constitution and underline [the mission] of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.”
Regarding the crisis in Syria, Gemayel said: “We cannot but sympathize and stand in solidarity with the Syrian people, who are calling for freedom and democracy.”
He added that the claims that Lebanon’s security is linked to Syria’s “need to be rectified because it is unacceptable that absence of security in Syria would imply [the same thing in Lebanon].”
The Kataeb leader also delivered a message to residents of Tripoli in North Lebanon calling on them to join efforts in support of “Lebanon and the Lebanese state in order to get rid of all statelets and security, political and social islands.”
“Confinement and radicalism are not part of our traditions,” Gemayel said.
