Former culture ministers lash out at Layoun over Beirut’s Roman hippodrome issue

Former Culture Ministers Tarek Mitri, Tamam Salam and Salim Warde criticized current Culture Minister Gaby Layoun for his stance regarding Beirut’s Roman hippodrome, the National News Agency reported on Friday.

“[We regret] the fact that Layoun is prioritizing narrow political interests over scientific and legal evidence,” the ministers said.

They underscored the importance of “refraining from making any changes to the site,” as well as their commitment “to keeping the [archeological site] in its place.”

According to some media reports, Culture Minister Gaby Layoun gave the green light in March for Beirut’s Roman hippodrome to be built over.
