Future bloc MP Khaled al-Daher said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s cabinet refused to treat the Syrian refugees in Lebanon as refugees.
“Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel Karim Ali considered them visitors and not refugees, and the cabinet [acted upon Ali’s] description,” Daher told Future News television.
He also said that most of the ministers wanted “to pressure the [Syrian] refugees [in Lebanon] in order make them return to Syria and die there.”
Daher added that Mikati’s cabinet’s “only” cared about the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and did not care about national sovereignty.
He also said that it was the cabinet’s responsibility to protect the Lebanese borders, adding that the government “until now has not taken the [appropriate] measures on the Lebanese-Syrian border.”
Lebanon’s political scene is split between supporters Assad’s regime, led by Hezbollah, and the pro-Western March 14 camp.
