Aoun defends Syrian regime’s crackdown

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun on Tuesday defended Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, saying that security forces have the right to suppress “chaos on the streets.”

“It is clear that the intentions of the [Syria] opposition are not good,” he added following his bloc’s weekly meeting.

Aoun also said that his bloc supports joining a national dialogue session “if it is limited to certain issues.”

“The last dialogue sessions aimed at discussing the defense strategy, but [participants] discussed removing Hezbollah’s arms [instead].”

The Change and Reform bloc leader reiterated his support of Hezbollah’s weapons, saying that they are necessary to defend Lebanon.

Aoun also addressed the issue of the 2013 parliamentary electoral law, saying he supports an election based on proportional representation.

President Michel Sleiman has called for a national dialogue session, while March 14 figures have said they will only join if the session tackles the issue of Hezbollah’s arms.

More than 1,600 civilians and 369 members of the army and security forces have been killed since March 15 in Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
