Gemayel says March 14 coalition
would support him for presidency

BEIRUT - Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel said that the March 14 coalition agreed to stand behind him in case there was a possibility for a March 14 figure to become president.

“The March 14 coalition said that it was ready to pull out [Lebanese Forces leader] Samir Geagea’s candidacy if [political parties] agreed on another candidate,” Gemayel told Al-Akhbar newspaper in remarks published Saturday.

Earlier this month, the March 14 coalition announced a new initiative to restart Lebanon’s stalled presidential elections, ruling out both Geagea and Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel for the post.

On August 21, the Change and Reform bloc submitted a draft law to parliament, which if approved would amend the constitution, allowing the Lebanese people, rather than members of parliament, to choose the country’s president.

Since elections began on April 23, the two rival blocs - which dominate Lebanese politics - have not managed to elect a successor to former President Michel Suleiman, whose term expired on May 25.

Why doesn't Amin get it? He had his chance at the presidency back in 1982, and he screwed up big time. The Lebanese people - the christians in particular - are tired of him and his family of backward peasants lording it over even more backward maronite villagers around Bickfaya. There are thousands of decent educated professional Maronites without feudal ancestry and without blood on their hands. Just the name "Gemayel" conjures up war, thievery, barbarity, corruption, etc.... Why would anyone want to have this idiot for president again?
