Minister: Security situation
‘utterly under control’

BEIRUT – National Defense Minister Samir Moqbel sought to reassure the Lebanese people about the country’s security situation on Monday.

“The security situation is completely under control,” Moqbel said following his meeting with Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Yuhanna X Yazigi in Balamand.

“The Lebanese army and all the security apparatuses are fully ready [and prepared],” the defense minister added.

He also played down the gravity of the apparent assassination attempt on General Security Director Abbas Ibrahim, targeted by suicide bomber who detonated his car at an Internal Security Forces checkpoint in Beqaa’s Dahr al-Baydar on Friday. Moqbel stressed that “there is no country in the world… that can control terrorism 100%.”

The defense minister looked to further reassure Lebanese citizens, citing the government’s work to avoid potential repercussions of regional turmoil.

“The situation in the region is dangerous, but the Lebanese parties are working together to face any consequence that might result from the developments in neighboring [countries].”
