Berri: Beirut bombings perpetrators
linked to assassination plots

BEIRUT - Speaker Nabih Berri said that the perpetrators of the bombings that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut had threatened to assassinate him along with other spiritual leaders and security officials.

“Those who targeted the embassy are the same who threatened to assassinate me, Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros al-Rai and Lebanese Armed Force Commander General Jean Qahwaji,” Berri said in remarks published by Al-Joumhouria newspaper on Wednesday.

“The identity of these perpetrators and the places they come from are well known.”

The speaker also warned that the suicide bombing attacks have turned Lebanon “in the eyes of those who stand behind the attacks” into a land of Jihad.

Two explosions rocked southern Beirut Tuesday morning near the Iranian embassy, killing at least 23 people and injuring 147 others.

The attack began when a suicide bomber riding a motorbike approached the Iranian embassy and detonated a five-kilogram bomb 25 meters away from the compound, a security source told NOW.

Two minutes later, a second suicide bomber detonated a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV packed with approximately 60 kilograms of explosives.

The identity of these perpetrators and the places they come from are well known.
