Sidon Sunni sheikh escapes

Pro-Hezbollah Sunni sheikh Maher Hammoud from Sidon escaped on Monday morning an assassination attempt in Sidon’s Al-Quds Square, the National News Agency reported.

 

Unknown gunmen targeted Sheikh Hammoud while he was leaving his residence and heading for the dawn prayers in the Al-Quds Mosque in the city.

 

The assailants’ gunshots missed the sheikh, who escaped the incident unscathed. 

 

LBC television reported later that the Lebanese army found the vehicle that the gunmen were driving, which was left abandoned in the city's Eliya intersection.

 

Security forces are speaking with the owner of the vehicle, who had reported earlier that his vehicle was stolen.
