Nawwaf Salam warns against
wasting international support

Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United Nations Nawwaf Salam warned that the support that his country secured during a meeting at the United Nations in New York could be wasted if it is not implemented effectively.

“The International Support Group for Lebanon meeting yielded very good results, but it could lose its [effectiveness] if the Lebanese side does not invest it properly,” Salam said in remarks published by As-Safir newspaper on Friday.

“This international support should be translated into something [concrete].”

The Lebanese envoy also said that the financial support agreed on during the meeting was not akin to “a suitcase full of money that we can take with us to Lebanon.”

“There will be further meetings to work out a mechanism to interpret the outcome that had been reached into palpable results.”

The support group meeting, that took place on Wednesday on the margins of the UN General Assembly, aimed to discuss ways to provide Lebanon with support in its effort to tackle the issue of the large influx of refugees from war-torn Syria.

According to the meeting’s agenda, the group’s goal is to provide “a platform of support that points to the commitment of the ongoing unified international community  to support Lebanon’s stability and its policy of disassociation, as well as its state institutions.”

There will be further meetings to work out a mechanism to interpret the outcome that had been reached into palpable results.
