IED attacks kills 2 soldiers outside Arsal

BEIRUT – Two Lebanese Armed Forces soldiers were killed early Friday afternoon outside Arsal by an improvised explosive device in the latest security incident to rock the Beqaa town.

Lebanon’s state National News Agency reported that three other soldiers were wounded as the IED detonated as their vehicle passed along a road between the Mousaydeh and Wadi Hamid areas outside Arsal.

The army immediately moved to secure the scene as military exports deployed to inspect the IED, the NNA added.

Earlier reports from Lebanese news outlets as well as AFP had said that the army soldiers had been targeted by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Arsal has been the focus of rising security tension as Islamist militants operating in the Qalamoun area of Syria have crossed the border and deployed outside the beleaguered Beqaa town.

In early August, the Lebanese army fought five days of battles with militants, resulting in the deaths of a number of soldiers, while Islamists kidnapped at least 30 Lebanese security personnel, sparking a protracted hostage crisis.
