Tourism Minister: Beirut
airport must be expanded

BEIRUT - Tourism Minister Michel Pharaoun said that Beirut’s Rafiq Hariri International Airport should be expanded, or an additional airport built in light of delays caused by heightened security procedures and an increase in arrivals, the National News Agency reported on Friday.

“The airport reached peak capacity this year, with traffic figures showing 30,000 arrivals and departures every day,” Pharaoun told the press during a tour of the airport.

“This means we will have to begin planning for expansion of the airport or construction of a new airport.”

He added that: “the months of June, July and August saw an increase of more than 25 percent in arrivals compared to last year, which means we are facing a positive problem.”

We will have to begin planning for expansion of the airport or construction of a new airport.
