Mashnouq calls Safa “a
de facto force in Syria”

BEIRUT – Interior Minister Nohad al-Mashnouq addressed Hezbollah’s Head of the Coordination and Liaison Unit Wafiq Safa as “a de facto force in Syria” at a security meeting on Monday.

“I am addressing you as a de facto force in Syria only, and specifically on the issue of the town of Tfeil, and not to coordinate about anything else,” sources quoted Mashnouq as saying.

Sources also told NOW that Safa participated in the meeting after Minister of State Mohammad Fneish confirmed to Mashnouq that Hezbollah has tasked Safa with handling coordination regarding the town of Tfeil.

During the meeting, Safa asked: “Why do we want to take citizens out of the town?” to which Mashnouq replied, “getting them out is a priority, as the most important thing is securing their safety. Otherwise, the Foreign Ministry must file a complaint to the UN Security Council, since the town is under siege and its residents are in danger.”

Over 4,000 Lebanese citizens and 10,000 Syrian refugees are currently in the besieged in the border town of Tfeil, living without supplies of food, electricity, shelter, or aid for four months.

Getting them out is a priority, as the most important thing is securing their safety.
