Mashnouq announces plan
to evacuate Tfeil residents

BEIRUT - Interior Minister Nohad Mashnouq announced Saturday that a plan had been drawn up to help Lebanese citizens leave the eastern Beqaa border village of Tfeil via a safe route.

Mashnouq said that the road would be guarded by “a legitimate Lebanese force” to make sure that no armed Syrian opposition fighters hid among the evacuating residents, Lebanese broadcaster LBC reported.

The announcement comes after a security meeting led by Mashnouq earlier on Saturday in the Interior Ministry to discuss the situation in Tfeil. The meeting was attended by security apparatus chiefs as well as Hezbollah's Liaison Unit official Wafiq Safa.

The meeting was followed by a closed session between General Security Director General Major Abbas Ibrahim, Safa and Mashnouq.

Over 4,000 Lebanese citizens and 10,000 Syrian refugees are currently under siege in the border town of Tfeil, living without supplies of food, electricity, shelter, or aid for four months.

Mashnouq said that the road would be guarded by “a legitimate Lebanese force” to make sure that no armed Syrian opposition fighters hid among the evacuating residents.
