BEIRUT – The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham claimed responsibility for the missile attack on the Shiite-populated northern Beqaa town of Labweh earlier on Tuesday.

The Al-Qaeda-linked group said in a message circulated on the @dw_sham Twitter account that the attack came in response to Hezbollah’s participation in the fighting raging in Yabrud on the outskirts of Damascus.

Five Katyusha rockets were launched from Syrian territory on Labweh without causing any casualties.

Following the missile attack, residents of the Beqaa town blocked the Arsal-Labweh road with sand barriers.

Tension has skyrocketed in the past year between Shiite residents of Labweh who back Hezbollah and neighboring Sunni-dominated Arsal, which locals mainly support the uprising against the Syrian regime.
