Regime releases jailed Syrian artist

The Syrian authorities released Youssef Abdelke, a high-profile artist who was detained in July at a regime checkpoint in Tartous.

According to Sky News Arabia, Abdelke was released on Thursday following his detention by members of the State Security Branch near the coastal town of Tartous.

Abdelke returned to Syria in 2005 after spending more than two decades in exile in France.

He became one of the first Syrian artists to publically voice their support for the Syrian uprising.

Abdelke, born in 1951, is also a member of the internal opposition National Coordination Body for Democratic Change (NCB).
