BEIRUT – ISIS has committed a massacre in a Kurdish-populated town northeast of Aleppo amid accusations that pro-regime forces had abandoned the village in the face of the extremist group’s offensive.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Tuesday morning that it confirmed that ISIS fighters killed at least 9 residents of Kafr Saghir, two of them children, after the jihadists briefly seized the town starting from Sunday.

“Contact with 45 other residents of the town has been lost, and their fate remains unknown,” the monitoring NGO tracking the conflict in the war-torn country added.

ISIS launched a raid on Kafr Saghir and nearby areas approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Aleppo on Sunday morning, before pro-regime forces managed to retake the region north of the Sheikh Najjar Industrial City the following day.

The attack came as Kurds across the Middle East celebrated Newroz, which marks the start of the New Year in the Kurdish calendar and is one of the most important holidays for ethnic group.

A news agency affiliated with ruling Kurdish authorities in northern Syria lambasted regime forces for "fleeing" from the town prior to the ISIS attack.

“ISIS mercenaries took control of the town after regime forces escaped, paving the way for the mercenaries to commit a massacre against civilians,” the ANHA news agency said in a report Monday.

Another Kurdish outlet, Xeber 24, said that regime forces in control of Kafr Saghir had left the town, leaving its “residents in the grip of ISIS.”

ANHA reported a higher death toll than the SOHR’s, saying that 45 civilians had been killed, while 100 others remained unaccounted for.

Sources inside Kafr Saghir—which has a population of 7,000 people—also told ANHA that a number of families fled to the Kurdish-majority towns of Tel Aran and Tel Hasal.
