BEIRUT – A coalition of Free Syrian Army-affiliated rebel groups has released a recording of an alleged Al-Nusra Front member admitting the Islamist group was behind the assassination of a prominent FSA leader.

The audio recording, which was shared Monday on the Syrian Revolutionaries Front’s YouTube account, purports to reveal an angry audio message sent by a man they identified as Akram al-Turk, a security officer in the Nusra Front.

“If I had been thinking of something for you while you were in Turkey I’d have sent someone to liquidate you. Just like we liquidated Jamil Raadoun and others, got that?” the purported Nusra operative warned.

Raadoun—the commander of the FSA-affiliated Al-Ghab Falcons—was killed by a car bombing in southern Turkey on August 26. Ankara has yet to announce who was behind the attack, while reports have emerged that Nusra is a main suspect.

The response, if there was any, of the recipient of Turk’s audio message was not included in the YouTube video. However, it can be determined from the recording that he was an FSA supporter or rebel with ties to Raadoun.

“When you were in Turkey you knew full well: Jamil Raadoun was sending you his greeting and he’d reserved tidy place next to himself for you,” the alleged Nusra member said.

Turk also directed a barrage of personal insults against the recipient, calling him a dog and telling him to “eat pork you pig.”

The purported Nusra security official also revealed that he believes his recipient was now in Europe, asking him: “Where are you, in some European country? You’re in Sweden, right?”

“Even though you’re in Germany… if I was thinking of something for you… I’d cut off your tongue but I’m not going to liquidate you.”

In turn, “a source close to Jamil Raadoun” told pro-rebel outlet Syrian-Reporter on Tuesday that the Islamist groups Jund al-Aqsa and Al-Nusra Front were involved in the assassination of the prominent FSA commander.

According to the source, Jund al-Aqsa was behind the assassination and those responsible are currently being held by Al-Nusra Front.

“They are Syrian nationals,” the source added.

“Jund al-Aqsa leadership convinced Nusra that Lt. Col. Raadoun was an apostate and that he was cooperating with the Americans.”

Nusra has clashed with FSA-affiliated units in the past, including in late 2014 when the Islamist group defeated the Hazzm Brigades and Syrian Revolutionaries Front in northern Syria.
